Over-Achiever: Bioshock Rebuttal (spoilers)

6 09 2007

Now, for most of you who love achievements, you were most likely shocked by Persepolian’s former post. Fear not! This anti-achievement agenda does not proliferate throughout the whole of the Pix3l Nati0n! I for one, am a well known achievement addict. Now, I am not an extreme addict (I avoided buying TMNT for its grotesquely easy achievements), and I have a decent score (5515, if you must know), but I love the concept of achievements, and how well they work. I personally use them as an indicator as to how much I completed a game. Now, enough of my ranting, so here is my rebuttle to my colleagues previous attack on the achievements for Bioshock.

Avid Inventor, 10 POINTS: Successfully invent at least 100 items.

This one is actually a feat to be accomplished, one which Persepolian DID NOT. I undertook this task right before the final fight with Atlas. It turned out to be longer than I initially thought. I found myself playing for an extra three hours, going through every level, trying to scrounge the parts to reach this goal which I assured myself was only 5-10 inventions away. I eventually resorted to grinding on splicers and rosies to get the parts I needed. This is truly a feat to be accomplished.

Completed Welcome, 10 POINTS: Successfully complete the Welcome To Rapture Level.

Defeated Dr. Steinman, 15 POINTS: The player has defeated the crazed Dr. Steinman.

Defeated Peach Wilkins, 15 POINTS: The player has defeated Peach Wilkins.

Restored the Forest, 15 POINTS: The player has restored the forests of Arcadia.

Completed Cohen’s Masterpiece, 30 POINTS: The player has completed Sander Cohen’s great masterpiece.

Defeated Andrew Ryan, 30 POINTS: The player has defeated Andrew Ryan.

Became a Big Daddy 30 POINTS: The player has become a Big Daddy.

Defeated Atlas 100 POINTS: The player has defeated Atlas.

Now I know I’m going to get beaten for this one, but hear me out. These can truly be considered achievements to one such as myself. Persepolian knows this, but I have only 100% Completed around 40 or so console games that I own. This number doesnt seem too bad, until you realize that I own around 305 games for 18 consoles. I regularly dont finish games 100%, so getting things like this are achievements for me. And yes, I did complete Bioshock 100%, achievements and all.

Tonic Collector 50 POINTS: The player has collected or invented 53 Tonics in the Physical, Engineering and Combat tracks.

Weapon Specialist 50 POINTS: The player has acquired all upgrades for all weapons.

Historian 50 POINTS: The player has found every audio diary.

Research PhD 20 POINTS: The player has maxed out all possible research.

All of these are also all achievements. To upgrade all the weapons, you have to not kill Sander Cohen at your first chance. Both Tonic Collector and Historian require rigorous searching to ensure all are found. Some of the audio diaries (5 in total) actually disappear if you dont grab them at your first chance. Research PhD is also an achievement which requires alot of time. Many people dont realize that you can research turrets, drones, and cameras. The only problem is, that these dont respawn, and once hacked, can no longer be researched. They and the Little Sisters are all finite, and must be researched when you have the chance.

Seriously good at this 40 POINTS: The player has completed the game on the hardest difficulty setting

Irony 10 Points: The player has taken a picture of Sander Cohen’s corpse

Found Cohen’s Room 10 POINTS: The player has visited Sander Cohen’s private quarters.

This is the last group that I will be writing about. Now, to beat the game on hard is truly an achievement to behold. Make no mistake, on hard, this game is VERY difficult. Your ammo is limited, enemies are much stronger, and money becomes much more scarce. To put the effort into beating hard deserves a reward. The two Sander Cohen achievements are two of my personal favorites, as they seem to contradict one another. You need to kill Cohen in order to photograph his corpse, but you need to let him live in order to get into his quarters. Few people know that once in his quarters, you can kill him, and his quarters are where the final weapon upgrade station is located.

Well, that was my rebuttal to Persepolian’s former post. I may just have to do these everytime he decides to whine about achievements.

Deceptic…….I mean Achievements Forever!
